TOYS: JURASSIC PARK ACTION FIGURES AND PLAY SETS

So in 1993 one of the biggest blockbuster movies of all time was released. No I am not talking about Mr Nanny, I am talking about Jurassic Park.

The ultimate dinosaur movie about a safari park that had real life dinosaurs in it. Audiences were thrilled and terrified when everything went to shit when the power went and the inmates (prehistoric ones to boot) took over the asylum and raised all kinds of hell.

I saw this movie in the cinema the day it came out and its a movie experience that still lives with me today. Like always when a decent movie comes out (especially in the 80's and 90's) it will soon be followed by a line of action figures and play sets. Thankfully it was Kenner that picked up the license who have a very good track record when it comes to making decent quality toys and especially toys of movie and TV characters.

So they released figures of all the characters in the film. Each figure came with lots of accessories including guns, harpoons and a baby dinosaur each. The figures were as good as you could get by 1993's standards.

Although the figures of the humans were pretty cool the main thing everyone wanted was the dinosaurs, as lets be honest they were the main stars of the move. I'm not saying that the actors did a bad job or anything like that but seeing the most life like dinosaurs tops anything that any human can say or do. If you saw Jurassic Park just because you like the acting work of Jeff Goldblum, or some other retarded bullshit that has nothing to with dinosaurs then.. get the fuck off my website you twat!

They released many dinosaurs in the toy line that did some pretty cool shit but the T-Rex was the must have toy of the bunch. The T Rex was the Castle Greyskull when it came to this line. And rightly so as the T Rex made noises, had removable parts for battle damage and the jaws opened and shut.

Another great thing about this toy line which was a winner for me was, that they looked amazing in the back garden when you played with them. The back yard really did become the jungles of Jurassic Park!

The line also released some pretty cool vehicles but a lot of them were non movie related things like a helicopter that can trap dinosaurs. The best vehicle is the one that's actually in the movie, the jeep. This one however has missile launchers and loads of other pretty cool shit.

The biggest (and most expensive) toy of the lot was the Jurassic Park Command Compound. Although this toy looks the absolute bollocks on the box it was somewhat of an anticlimax when you opened it up.

I ended up using my control center (or what ever the fuck its called) as a jail for my out of line GI Joes and other action figures that had been brought to justice for their murders and rapes. They released a second line of Jurassic park figures in 1994 which was a terrible idea that fell flat on its face. No one wants toys of last years blockbuster movie when this years blockbuster has toys out also. They released another set when the Lost World was released which didn't really take off either.

The thing with these toys also, was the fact that dinosaur toys have always been available at very cheap prices which was something which would some what hinder the success of this line. Why would parents splash out on expensive licensed toys when they can get cheap knock offs from next to nothing. Jurassic Park returns this year to the cinema in 3D as it marks the 20th anniversary of the movie being released. I cant believe its 20 years ago.. and I still haven;t grown up.

GAMING: WWF ROYAL RUMBLE PINBALL MACHINE

With the WWE Royal Rumble just around the corner (and the fact I am the biggest pinball junkie going) I thought it would be a good time to induct one of my favorite pinball tables of all time. Data East made many licensed video games and pinball machines during the 90's and were very big players when it came to the world of coin op gaming.

The machine was released at the end of 93 which was a key point in the WWF's decline in the mid nineties. A lot of the established talent like Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior were gone and guys like Randy Savage were restricted to commentary.

With that said this did not stop Data East from still publishing the image of every ones favorite orange goblin Hulk Hogan smack bang in the middle of the LED board.

As far as pinball machines go, I thought as a kid (and still as a degenerate adult) that this is a pretty solid pinball machine. Maybe its the fact it plays Hulk Hogans and everyone else's themes when you hit certain ramps and bumpers. To be honest you could probably make a WWF logo out of dog shit and I would still probably buy it on ebay (has to be the old school logo of course!).

There has never been a time go by (even to this day) when I haven't put a quid in and fired up this bad boy. I always find this machine in the most random beach huts abroad and music venues in London. You can pick one up for over a grand and when I win the lottery, I am buying this straight away and replacing the front door of my house with this

TOYS: CROSSBOWS AND CATAPULTS

Crossbows and Catapults is a game which will spark many memories that we have completely erased from our brains. This was the case for me after recently finding a piece from the game in a chest full of crap from the 80's. This game was very popular at the time and I (as well as lots of people) had it. If you wasn't born in time or was alive at the time and never had it.. you missed out big time.

The game was such a great idea many companies bought the rights and re made this game over and over again. From what I believe there is a new updated version in the United States which is still available.

The game came packed inside a massive box which like all 80's board games had amazing box cover artwork which just hooked you in the first time you laid eyes on it. So the object of the game was to set up your camps of either barbarians or savages by strategically placing them along with the brick walls and firing apparatus. The aim of the game was to take turns at firing the crossbows and catapults at the other camp until everyone was dead and everything was destroyed.

The weapons that were used to unleash hell on the opposing side were very well made. Using elastic bands for tension the catapults and crossbows shot discs at targets with a very good level of power and accuracy.

The game also had these towers which when the door is hit from a shot activates a bumper on the top which will make any figure standing on top go flying to his death. The games figures were of a pretty decent standard but not as good as Dungeons Dragons or Hero Quests figures in terms of detail. Many expansion packs were released which included horses and all other types of new accessories which were fun to annihilate with plastic discs. Crossbows and Catapults had a good run all the way through the 80's before dying out in the early 90's to become yet another Lost Entertainment gem.

MOVIES: POLICE STORY

Police Story is my favorite movie starring Jackie Chan. Not only did Jackie act but he did his own stunts, directed this movie and  even sung the end song in the credits.

So the movie is about the Hong Kong police force trying to take down a drugs cartel and its kingpin. The movies main character Kevin Chan (in China the character is called Chan Ka Kui) is a young hot shot undercover police officer.

After arresting the syndicate's leader Koo in a police bust which leveled a whole a whole town the case goes to court only to be thrown out after an amusing and embarrassing tape recording of Chan and a female witness emerges.

The movie is about Chan redeeming himself in front of the public and his fellow Police officers by bringing the cartel and its leader to justice by any means necessary  This movie is a high octane roller coaster ride from start to finish.

The movie contains some of the greatest fight scenes and stunts to ever be captured on film. Wether its men flying out of the windows of the top deck of a double decker bus, men jumping off buildings and the movies ultimate climax which takes place in a busy shopping mall, this movie hands down has some of the ballsiest shit you will ever see.

The movies ultimate moment is when Chan leaps off of a balcony at the top of the shopping mall and descends down a 100 feet of live electrical lights. He then crashes through a glass green house at the bottom, which is nothing short of spectacular. The stunt in real life nearly killed Chan and he received 1st degree burns from the electric shock from the exploding lights.

Like all Jackie Chan movies this one has lots of very comedic moments and embarrassing situations that the main character gets involved in. The movie has its very serious moments also which help level everything out. If you are a fan of kung fu, Jackie Chan or just amazing action films in general mark this one down as one to watch and if you have seen it before.. watch it again!
